We had to take our son out of the local junior high and home school him for 1 1/2 years. It was a difficult decision, took an incredible amount of time and attention, but it worked out well for our child in the short and long term. Here are my thoughts about what works in home schooling, and how to promote a love of nature for pagans and non-pagans alike. I'm also passing on internet and book resources that were helpful to us. pool on the American River
I've been leaving a formal offering at a pool on the American River for the last few years. Usually in September around Oshun's saints day, this year I went on 9-9-09. So I thought I would share my examples for leaving offerings outside in nature. Continue reading →
The Blue Marble, Visible Earth- NASA
The planet emanates a constant rumble far below the limits of human hearing. Discovered in 1998 this low level "hum" was thought to perhaps be caused by disturbances in the ocean or atmosphere. Scientists now suggest that the Earth’s hum is caused not by earthquakes or atmospheric turbulence, but by ocean waves colliding with the seafloor. It will be interesting to see if there are other factors that are also involved with the hum. (The idea of the Earth humming or singing is not so new to many spiritual traditions.) Here are some articles about the 'hum', earth 'singing', moon hums, and earth "hiss"! Continue reading →

My grandfather kept bees for nearly 70 years, and I wish he was alive to ask about the current colony collapses. He started by keeping wild bees in the Oklahoma Territory/Texas area in the early 1900's, and said the European bees were much 'nicer'. (To translate from frontier 'speak'- they didn't sting as much as the wild bees. While it's possible, I 've no doubt he would have recommended against keeping wild bees in hives based on his experiences!)
Grandfather Frank did say honey bee colonies collapsed sometimes for no apparent reason, and on a somewhat regular basis; he would get new queens and start over when this happened. Continue reading →

Someone asked on a message board about how to transplant an oak tree. Here is my answer, with what worked for me and some added photos.
Judy-
Is this a deciduous (fall leaf dropping) or live oak? A 3-4' tall oak may have too deep and extensive a root system to dig up and move successfully, but if it is in a raised flower bed with loose soil you might be able to get most of it's roots out. You may find that the roots of the 2 trees are very intertwined, and that you could damage both trees in removing the oak.
That said- yes, it is possible to move oaks when they are small enough. Continue reading →
Pagan or alternative festivals can be fun. They can also fade away, just like other non-profit, volunteer-run group events. Having been involved in organizations and festivals in the past, here are suggestions for large pagan events. Included are tips for festival organization, volunteer issues, safety, and non-profit groups.
While not every group or event will want or need to use these tips, they are offered in the hope that they can help those putting on pagan festivals. (And yes- I've actually experienced the cautionary examples used!) Continue reading →

For an update on Greek religion groups and resources see this post:
Hellenic (Greek) & Roman religion
*************************************************************
It’s estimated that there are thousands of Greeks worshiping the ancient Roman Gods. Following the documentary “I Still Worship Zeus (2004)" the Ellinais association was formed in 2005. In 2006 the Greek high court granted them status as a “cultural association based on religious grounds”. Ellinais believes in world peace, ecological awareness, and the right to education. (Beliefs common to pagan or polytheistic groups). One of their goals is to find and bless ancient temples in Greece.
It sound like Ellinais is fighting for religious equality in a difficult political system. I couldn’t find much on what they are doing this year, but here are some past articles: Continue reading →

What is sacred? For me and others the answer is- nature is sacred! We've found that a reverence for nature and respect for this world is vital, whether expressed simply as ‘Nature is good’, in a solo spiritual practice, or as part of a formal religious tradition. So spirit, science, and our interactions with nature are delved into on this site. Enjoy your time here, and may green blessings be yours!
